First Time, Last Time?

Five years ago, when our friends Travis & Katie were up from the States visiting, we made our first trip out to Greenwich.  Since then we have made at least 2 trip a year up to the long boardwalk that takes us to the nearly empty beach.  It's one of our favourite places to go, & we always make sure to bring anyone who come to visit out to Greenwich (although PChad still has not made it out there!)  I took a picture on our first trip of the kids on the sand...

And when we went again a few days ago I took what could be our last picture at Greenwich...

They have grown quite a bit, & we will miss our treks to Greenwich, & the ice cream afterwards!

“Pulling A Sherilyn”

When PChad & I lived in London, we lived with Geoff & Margaret, an older couple that we met at church.  They invited us to live with them since they had a big house & money was tight for us.  We gratefully accepted, & became part of the family.

At the time, I was working in a Solicitor’s office & I would get home from work around 8pm.  Since I had a work uniform, I’d often go upstairs & change into my pyjamas before supper, so Geoff & Margaret became accustomed to seeing me in my PJs relatively early in the evening.

One night, as PChad & I were watching TV after supper, Geoff popped his head in the TV room, & asked if it would be ok for him to put his pyjamas on.  “Of course!” we replied.  He came downstairs a few minutes later wearing a nightshirt, nightcap, & slippers…

We still stay in contact with Geoff & Margaret, & from time to time they let us know that Geoff still likes to ‘pull a Sherilyn’, meaning he gets his PJs on early.

Bass Has Always Been Popular!

From 1988, “Tigra & Bunny” informed us that they liked the cars that went BOOM!

Now Meghan Trainor is here in 2014 to let us know that she is all about that Bass!

I can’t hear “All About That Bass” without thinking about “The Cars That Go Boom”!

Happy Friday!

Flashback Friday

I thought I’d look back at what we were up to around this time 5 years ago.  Chancery was not quite a year old, & apparently the weather was starting to get pretty nice…

The Sweater

This song brings me back to grade 5.  We sang it quite a bit, & we may have believed in the message of it as well…

Do you remember this one?

Alternate Payment

15x-versatility-saddle-16-When we lived in Alberta, I worked at a Western Shop.  We sold everything from saddles & tack, to clothing & furniture.  A huge part of the business was conducted through mail-order, & I worked in that department.  My job involved taking orders over the phone, going through the store & collecting the various items, packing the orders & shipping them out.  I got really good at knowing what would fit in each box, & approximately how much each package would cost to ship with each various company.

Fireplace Screen

We had 3 methods of delivery, Canada Post (which was generally slower & a bit pricey), Courier (super fast, but also pricey), or Greyhound (pretty cheap, depending where you lived, it could take as little as 1-2 days).  Most people who ordered chose to have their items shipped with Greyhound, which was fine with us.  They had a flat rate for small items, so it was easy to know what to charge the customer, & the people were really nice who ran the local depot.

After working at the store for a few months, my supervisor realized that in our contract with Greyhound, the local depot was supposed to come & pick up our parcels daily.  When we talked to the people there, they said that they didn’t actually have the people available to do that.  There was generally only one person in the depot at a time.

After a lot of negotiation, it was decided that they could pick up our parcels at 1:00pm everyday, they’d just have to have an employee come over just at the shift change.  It was a nice change to not have to stop what we were doing twice a day to deliver our parcels to the depot, but there was a 10am bus that we were missing every morning due to their pick-up availability.  So, I kept bringing the parcels for the morning bus, & sometimes I’d bring another load for the 3:30pm bus.  Quite often we’d end up calling the depot to tell them we didn’t have anything to pick up at 1:00, since I had already brought everything for the morning bus.  But by 3:30 we’d have another load, so off I’d go.

As the summer wore on, the lure of the drinks cooler at the depot got more & more tempting.  I never carried cash at that time, since debit cards were accepted everywhere, it was never really a problem, but there was a sign on the register which read, “No credit/debit for transactions under $10.”  So, I resisted for awhile, but one hot day, I HAD to have a lemonade, so I took one out of the cooler, walked over to the register & asked, “I know the sign says it’s not allowed, but could you make an exception, just this once?”

The cashier (who also owned the depot) replied, “Well, it would actually cost me less to GIVE you the lemonade than it would to ring it through, so you can have it.”

A few days later, I remembered to bring cash, & after unloading my truck I grabbed a lemonade & went to the register.  The cashier told me, “Just take it, in fact you might as well just take one everyday since you’re making it easier on us by bringing everything here.”

And that is how I got paid in lemonade, for delivering western tack to the bus depot.

Carpet

We were sitting around the table after lunch today & my brother was trying to explain to his wife, the purpose of a carpet rake.  My parents house had shag carpet, the colour of dark green grass, since the house was built in 1971.  About a month ago, it was finally all taken out & my brother Brian, as per usual, is pointing out all the things that are different now from when he lived here.  I think if he had his way, nothing would have changed at all, & the bedroom he slept in would have been made into a shrine.

So, we talked about the neighbour kids coming over & begging to use the carpet rake, since not many of their houses had them.  WE loved having the long carpeting, since it worked great for farming with our tractors.  And then Brenda said, "I understand it was fun, but what was the PURPOSE of the rake?"

Brian responded, "It's shag, Baby, SHAG!"

Asher was playing not too far away, & we heard him start repeating, "Shag, Baby, shag!"

PChad's going to wonder just what we are teaching the kids on our holidays.  He sounds like a little Austin Powers!

Mr. Yuk

I was cleaning toilets & Chancery saw me pick up the bottle of cleaner.  She informed me, “Mummy, that’s Mr. Yuk!”  I don’t know if you can even get the Mr. Yuk stickers anymore, but I remember when I was little, they were on everything in the laundry room.

Did you know there was also a Mr. Yuk song?  True story!  And the song just happens to be one of the kids’ favourites as well.  WARNING!!!! –If you play this with small children around, you may be requested to play it over, & OVER, & OVER!!!

Happy Friday!

Our Summer In Burdett

Looking outside right now, it’s hard to imagine the warmth of summer, especially with 2 feet of snow covering the front lawn.  I was recently looking through some old pictures & decided I’d bring some summer to my blog.
*************

When PChad was in Seminary, one of the requirements was to do a summer assignment at a church.  We were assigned to a small church in the middle of nowhere Southern Alberta.  While we were there, I took a break from corporate life & enjoyed some holidays.  PChad took a break from school, and pastored the church.

I thoroughly enjoyed being able to take advantage of fields & wide open spaces.  I’m a country girl at heart!

And every now & then, PChad would take a break & enjoy it with me too.

The parsonage came supplied with two Momma cats, so we were able to enjoy a fresh batch of kittens shortly after we arrived.855

One of the parishioners loaned us a puppy (with the hope that we’d become attached & take it back to Michigan with us), so we were able to hit the “puppy stage” that is a vital step on the road to becoming parents…

…and we named her “Prairie”.

After our time commitment was over, we headed to PChad’s parents for a few weeks, and had the opportunity to take our niece & nephew camping for a few days.

All in all, it was a great summer.  We had a great placement, and felt really welcomed by the community, and as an added bonus, we got to spend some time with PChad’s family.

Next Time Take The Stairs

When I was in jr. high, my family was on a trip in Washington DC.  We had decided to go visit one of the battlefields in the area, and we hopped on the elevator ready to start our adventure.  On the way down, my brothers decided it would be fun to "shake" the elevator, so they started swaying from side to side.  I thought I should get in on the action, but of course I had to do it bigger & better, so I started jumping.

Little did I know that elevators are fitted with emergency brakes to stop an elevator from plummeting towards the ground if it senses that it is descending too rapidly.  Apparently, my jumping, caused the elevator to trigger the emergency brakes, and the five of us were suddenly trapped between floors for a few hours until the fire brigade could come & rescue us.

This wouldn't have been that big of a deal if my mom wasn't claustrophobic.  She's not the biggest fan of elevators at the best of times, but to say she was upset with me, would barely scratch the surface.  But it could have been worse....

*****************************
Nicholas White was working late one night & became trapped in the elevator.  Apparently it was a major malfunction & he was stuck for the next 41 hours!  And the entire ordeal was caught on the surveillance video.

Classic Christmas Songs

There are a few songs that I always think of when I remember Christmases growing up.  The first one is a little known song "Christmas in the Northwest".  I suppose that there are lots of songs about celebrating Christmas in different areas, but this was MY Christmas locale.  When I finally moved out of the Seattle area, it struck me as odd that no one had heard this song, but we heard it year after year over the holidays.

The other song I remember because everytime it was played on the radio, the announcer would give a 1 or 2 song warning that he was about to play it so everyone could go & get their tape recorders. So obviously it was difficult to get your hands on the album. Mom, Dad.... Here it is, "Stop the Cavalry" performed by the Cory Band

Though why they never played the original version by Jona Lewie, I have no idea as I think it's good as well.

Which version do you prefer? Are there little known Christmas songs particular to your region?

You Know You're Tired When..........

When I look back at my high school days, I am amazed at the energy I had.  My schedule looked something like this:

5:30 -Wake up & get ready.  Leave the house by 6:00.

6:30 - 9:30 -Work at Espresso Stand, do any homework that hadn't gotten finished yet.
9:30 - 2:15 -School
2:30 - 4:00 -Track practice
4:30 -9:00 -Work at McDonald's

Then I'd go home & be in bed around 9:30.  I also worked at McDonald's on Saturdays & some Sunday afternoons/evenings.

The early mornings weren't so bad, maybe b/c once I got to the coffee shop I loaded up on caffeine. But the thing that I really remember about that time was the dreams I would have.

I dreamed about sleeping on the couch that was in the back of my History class.  I dreamed about sleeping in my car.  I dreamed about sleeping in my bed at home, and I dreamed about sleeping on the couch at my friend's house.

Maybe because I knew that I wasn't ACTUALLY getting enough sleep, I tricked myself into believing I had, since I had dreamed about having naps all the time.  I don't remember being tired at all, but I still remember those dreams quite clearly.......

Baby Pics

Rach @ In His Hands is hosting a baby picture carnival today, so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity for my readers to settle something for us. We want to know who you think our kids look like.

Feel The Burn

About 5 years ago I was having issues w/ my stomach every morning. Usually I can cope w/ such things, but it was getting out of hand. To the point where I couldn't drink my daily latte anymore b/c it was upsetting my stomach. We were trying to make a baby, but after countless negative pregnancy tests & continued morning sickness I went to the doctor to see what was up. Long story short, no, I was not pregnant, I had acid reflux, but they wanted to find out more.

After a few months of testing they figured out I had gastroparesis which means that my stomach takes too long to empty after eating (I never figured out how that works w/ also having a fast metabolism). I was given some erythromycin to help my stomach empty faster & also to combat the acid reflux. I was told I'd have to be on the erythromycin for the rest of my life b/c my stomach just needed some help, but since we were also working on expanding our family & that medication can cause complications, I just took myself off it & tried eating smaller meals more often. Things were going fine until last Friday.

Suddenly my stomach felt like it was on fire & my throat was full of acid. I picked up some Zantac at the pharmacy, but after 3 days w/o much improvement I went to the doctor yesterday & am now back on the reflux meds to see how they work. Why I've been fine for all those years & suddenly it's back is anybody's guess, but so far the medication's not working great, hopefully it will soon. The biggest issue I've been having is drinking water. The more water I drink, the worse it gets, but since I'm nursing Chancery I have to drink lots of it.

There are 2 ways this could go:
1. These meds work & I have no more issues w/ it. (A great option)
2. The meds don't work & in 6 weeks I have an endoscopy. (A fun option, they give you drugs that make you have a GREAT day!)

So, I'm hoping the drugs work or my body decides to correct itself again b/c I am not looking forward to 6 more weeks of this!

Ralph

My friend Katie asked me the other day if I still had Ralph. Ralph is a stuffed dog that I got for my 5th birthday from a childhood friend. I was sick for my birthday, but this friend's mother dropped off a gift. Until a few years back I always thought of his name being "Ralf", maybe b/c I had spelling issues, but more probably b/c I had never encountered anyone actually named "Ralph" before.

There are some variances in the story of how he got his name, my mom thinks it was written on the tag, but I'm pretty sure I gave him the name myself b/c he looked like the dog on the Muppet Show. I only learned later that that dog's name was actually "Rowlf", which probably explains the spelling issue.

Sometimes Ralph decided he's like to play dress up, but since he was a boy he liked to do the minimum amount. He'd wear ribbons on his ears & tail (blue of course) & go by the name of "Lorene" (the name of an Aunt of mine that he apparently really liked).

Ralph was quite the inquisitive pup, he was always banging his nose on windows, counter tops, walls, floors, railings, you name it, he's sniffed it & has the marks on his nose to prove it!

My brother's always knew that if they really wanted to get to me all they had to do was mess w/ Ralph. Usually it was pretty tame, but once Brian got carried away & ripped one of Ralph's arms off. I think he was quite surprised, but Dr. Mom came to the rescue & sewed Ralph back up!

In Grade One, my friend Jason M happened to have the exact same dog, except that his had spots on it. I have never seen another dog quite like Ralph other than Jason's. In highschool Ralph became the Cross-Country team mascot.

He came to all the races & was in all the team photos.

He even went to Mexico for a Mission's trip!

Here he is on the plane w/ one of the teachers
on the way home from Mexico.

Oh yes, he's quite the traveller. He really enjoyed going camping, but as he got older he preferred to stay in the trailer most of the time as he was worried about getting dirty. In college, he took his duties as guard dog quite seriously & rarely left the dorm. Getting married was a hard thing for him to take. It was mandated that Ralph had to give up his bed, for a few years he sat on the dresser, but as we moved more & more he chose to shut us out. I think he figured that if he wasn't allowed to sightsee, he might as well stay at home, so he never made the trip to Europe, choosing instead to hibernate for a few years. He finally made a reappearance once we moved to PEI. He really likes it here, but upon meeting the children, has chosen a high place so as not to inflame his arthritis. He did agree to a quick photoshoot:

He was quite tired by the end of it all.

What's was your favourite childhood toy? Do you still have it?

Trick Or Treat!

When I was growing up, my brothers & I were never allowed to go trick or treating. We used to hand out the candies to everyone who came to the door. There was some fun in that, seeing everyone's costume, seeing how laden down all your friends were w/ bags full of candy......

I didn't really care about the dressing up part, it was all the candy that I was missing out on! My friends used to share some of their plunder w/ me, but of course they kept all the good stuff for themselves, not that I blame them for that.

I always figured that my parents didn't want us out wreaking havoc on the neighborhood & generally getting into mischief. And they always made it clear they didn't want us begging people for candy. So one year my parents were gone the day after Halloween. I was home alone to sit & ponder the unfairness of life & came up w/ a brilliant plan!

I don't know exactly how old I was, but I know I was at least in grade 6. I decided there were probably alot of older people in the neighborhood that had candy left over that they didn't want lying around the house tempting them. So I thought I'd help them out by offering to take it off their hands.

I grabbed a few grocery bags & started out on my mission of generosity. I went all around the neighbourhood knocking on doors, ringing bells, & I believe my pitch went something like this, "Halloween clean up crew! Have any extra candy you'd like to get off your hands?"

After I had finished the first street, my friend April had come home from school & I enlisted her help. By the time we had gotten around the whole neighborhood we had 3 bags FULL of candy! We found that most people had not yet moved their candy stashes from the front door of their homes & would dump the entirety in our outstreched arms.

I ended up keeping my loot bag at April's house b/c I figured my mom might get suspicious if I brought all that candy at home. That one day made up for all the years of having to stay at home!

Playback

The other day I was thinking how cool it would be if life had a playback button. Not a REWIND button, as most people would prefer I'm sure, but just a playback. Like if your whole life were recorded, and you could just take an hour every now and then to review something. "That's what we have memories for!" I can hear you say, but they don't always stay true to how things were either. And I'm not just talking about WATCHING things in the past, but also to remember the feelings you had while you were in that moment. Ok, this would be nice for big things like your wedding, or the birth of your children (minus the painful parts), but also for some decisions you made. Sometimes I wonder what was going through my head when I made some decisions, not that I want to change them, I'm perfectly happy with where those choices have gotten me, but I just wonder what was going on in the snippets of memory that aren't there anymore, you know?
For instance, I'd like to see the part of my life where Katie and April and I made our club in the woods. Some of the times when our whole neighbourhood would get together in the evenings and play softball on the field across from our house. I'd like to relive some of the Cross Country races from highschool. I want to remember more of the times I spent with Theresa in junior high. The 8th grade camping trip to Oswald West state park. Camping with the youth group at Jesus Northwest & Creation. Clarissa and I shopping at Value Village. Dordt pit parties, and going to Twisters. Dancing with Ian & Fiona at Walkabout in London. Playing Dutch Blitz with the cousins at Christmas. Camping with Rubinos. I remember these times were fun, but I don't remember anything really specific about them. Maybe part of that comes with getting older, that your memory fails you more.... But I don't even just mean the good times. Sometimes I'd like to be able to remember the rotten times better too, maybe so I could see how far past that I've gotten......
I suppose in some ways this should also be a lesson to cherish the everyday times more right now so I DO remember more later in life..... and take lots of PICTURES!!
(and if any of you could help out with any of these memorable moments, I'd welcome your reminiscence.)
