Night Vision

Asher & Chancery were commenting on how dark it was outside around 4 pm the other day…

Chancery: “It’s dark outside.”

Asher: “Yes it is, Chancery.”

Chancery: “We need to have a flashlight so we can see if we go out there.”

Asher: “Not if we are candle people.”

Me: “Wouldn’t a candle person get burned?”

Asher: “No, they only have fire on their heads, & it doesn’t burn them because it’s the Holy Spirit!”

Me: “Oh, you mean like when the tongues of fire came down at Pentecost?”

Asher: “Yes!  I want to be like that so I can see in the dark!”

Me: “Well, I’m not sure that it helped them see in the dark.”

Chancery: “But it was fire on their heads, so they could see!”

I guess we’ll just have to add that to the list of things we need to ask God about someday…

Good Shot!

Asher was reading the story of David & Goliath out of the kids’ Bible after dinner the other night.  Each time we turn the page, he looks at the picture first, then starts reading.

He read that David was headed out to meet Goliath, turned the page, looked around, & said, “Whoa, good shot, David!”

He’s so affirming!

Proper Punctuation

Asher was reading out of our children’s Bible after lunch.  We were at the story of Moses, & this particular Bible really simplifies things.  When we got to the part that Pharaoh's daughter finds Moses in the reeds & Moses’ sister offers to help, Asher read a sentence that just didn’t sound right.

Asher read, “Would you like someone to help you?  Take care of that baby!”

It sounded very demanding, which I didn’t remember from the original story.

When I had a look at it later, I saw that it should be, “Would you like someone to help you take care of that baby?”

Which made a lot more sense.  It just goes to show the importance of proper punctuation.

Sacrifice

We have been encouraging the kids to pray their own prayers at lunchtime, which has resulted in Asher developing a prayer & proceeding to sing it.

“Thank you, God, for everything.  Everything around us when we are outside, & everything around us inside.  Thank you, THANK YOU for everything, everything, ♫♪ eve-ry-thiiiing!♪♫

Chancery caught on, & began using Asher’s prayer as well.  Even this prayer started to become rote, so we told the kids they should be more specific about what they are thankful for which resulted in Chancery’s…

“Thank you for my fork, and thank you for my milk, and thank you for…  *sigh* Daddy’s fork.  Amen!”

So the other day, we were quite surprised when Asher came up with the following prayer out of the blue.

“Dear God, when people are dying, they have to kill a lamb so the lamb dies instead of them dying.  Amen.”

Apparently he got confused about the story of the Passover (Exodus 12) that we had read during devotions the day before…

Devotions Please!

WE have a little childern's Bible on the table that we read for devotions after dinner. This morning Asher saw it & asked if we could read from it. But we had gotten up a bit late & PChad had to get to work, so we said no, but we'd read it after dinner.

Asher: "Can I read from that Bible?"

Us: "No, we'll do that tonight."

Asher: "Can I read from that Bible right there?"

Us: "Not right now."

Asher: "That Bible right there on the table, can I read it right now?"

Us: "We do that after dinner, not at breakfast time."

Asher: "Asher wants to read from that Bible on the table, right there! Please can I read it?"

We finally gave in & read one, he is nothing if not persistent!

Joseph's Coat

On Tuesdays we go to coffee break at church & Asher gets to go to "Little Lambs" which teaches him about some people in the Bible. He takes the papers home, but I have a really hard time getting him to tell me anything about what they did other than that they do puzzles, have a snack, & sing songs.

He never tells me waht songs they sing. He always tells me "Deep & Wide" which I am pretty sure isn't what they sing every week. On the way out to the truck this week I caught him singing, "The more we get together," he then paused, realized he was singing in my presence, & said, "No, we didn't sing THAT song!" I don't know WHY he won't tell me, it's not like I make him sing the songs over & over at home, he just wants to keep the songs to himself & I suppose that's ok.

Over lunch I usually ask who they learned about that day & he'll tell me their names, but not much more than that. Well, this week it was a bit different. He told me all about Jesus & how he got a coat from his brothers, but his brothers didn't have one.

I know, he was a bit mixed up in the names department, so I straightened him out a bit & then asked if the brothers were jealous. He said, "No, they were sad," then he decided that didn't cover all the emotions, & procalimed, "they were MAD!"

Later he was telling P Chad over dinner all about Joseph (he got the name right this time) & his brothers & the coat. He got to the part that the brothers didn't have one & added, "Just like Jesus & Zaccheus, they didn't have a coat EITHER!"

I suppose it's true, but someday we're going to have to make sure he gets all those Bible stories straightened out.

Dinnertime Conversations

Last night we had pasta for dinner & we have a 7 vegetable primavera sauce. Asher picked one of the veggies out & asked what it was. P Chad told him it was a Zuchinni. Asher said, “Zuchinni went WAAAY up in a tree for Jesus.”

Then we explained that was ZACHEUS, not Zucchini. We said that Zacheus was a MAN & Zucchini was a vegetable. He proceeded to eat more pasta & we thought the matter was finished, until he blurted out, “Zacheus is a vegetable!”

After dinner I was cleaning up the dishes & Asher told me that he doesn’t like the hiccups. I said it was a good thing he didn’t have them then. He informed me quite passionately, “Yes I DO have hiccups IN MY MOUTH!” I suppose that’s better than them being in some other part of his body.

Naughty Jesus

Pastor Chad wrote about an impromptu Bible lesson we had today during snack time. Read about it here.
