A little unusual this morning.  Chancery is sick, so she’s staying home from church, but the kids wanted to get a little bit of book time in with Yumi before she & Asher head to church.

Playing Games

When Asher plays his DS, it's serious business...  We enjoy watching him almost as much as he likes to play!

Teaching

You probably have noticed that my blog has become quite quiet these days.  This is in part due to the kids both being in school, & not having as much time spent together means not having those fun/odd conversations as often.

Also, I have been crazy busy!  I’m not really sure what has added to the craziness, but it seems the days are flying by!

I have increased the number of days that I help with math at the local school to 2 mornings a week.  I have really enjoyed being able to to delve into the world of Algebra once again!

I tutor a variety of grade levels/abilities.  One group is just learning the F.O.I.L. method for problems like this:

(2x-4) (5x+2)

it’s one of my favourite lessons!  Some students are just getting into multiplying & dividing fractions (so fun!).

One thing I discovered when I was in college & thinking about becoming a teacher is that I would much rather reinforce concepts that has been taught in class rather than stand up in front of a classroom full of kids & teach it myself.  This time at the school has really solidified that for me.

I have also discovered that if a student has the basic math concepts down & just needs a little extra guidance I can often reword the problem or explain it in a way that helps them to understand it a bit more.  But the problem I have been faced with a few times is the student who knows their times tables, fractions, decimals, but has issues with adding & subtracting 2 digit numbers.  No matter how many ways I have tried wording it, I can’t get a correct answer for 10-9.  So, I need some help!  Please offer any tips/suggestions, I’m stumped on this one!

Old Books

In our house, we treasure books.  Some of my favourite books are old kids books.  Some from when I was little, & some from even before that!  I find the old stories quite fun, & the different wording is quite interesting.  Some of our favourites happen to be Golden Books.

Chancery was looking at a stack of books during her rest time today, & when I went into her room, she said, “I’m not done all these books that you gave me!  I’m reading this one, but I don’t like the Chubby Chuck Chewie…  Who is this girl anyway?”

This was the book in question…

The book Chancery had just finished was lying nearby, & I pointed out that it was the same character as the girl in the bird book…il_fullxfull.232295493

I always loved the illustrations in these books, but apparently they are disturbing to Chancery!

Not A Girl

Asher piped up from the backseat of the car the other day…

Asher: “I’m glad I’m not a girl.”

Me: “Why?”

Asher: “Because now I don’t ever have to get earrings in my ears.”

Me: “You don’t want earrings?”

Asher: “No, I think it would hurt too much, so I’m glad I don’t have to get them.”

I didn’t bother telling him that guys can get their ears pierced too.  So far, I don’t think we’ll have to worry about that for awhile.

Patience

Chancery was playing in the living room the other day & I was doing something in the kitchen.  She called out…

Chancery: “Can you help me?”

Me: “Yes give me a minute.”

Chancery: “Give you a minute?”

Me: “Yes, just a minute.”

Chancery: “I can’t, I don’t have any minutes in my purse!”

Amazing E!

Chancery was having quite time looking at books in her room today when I heard a little voice call out, “Mummy?  Or Daddy?  Or anybody?  Did you know that the letter E can make sounds like ‘eee!’ or ‘eh’?”

“That’s pretty neat isn’t it?” I replied.

“Yes it is!” Chancery responded, then went right back to her reading.  It’s so fun to hear kids start to understand letters, words, & reading!

Halloween!

It was a warm & rainy Halloween night, but the kids braved the elements & went around the neighbourhood.  They collected quite a stash of candy, chips, & even a few cans of soda!  The kids didn’t even need to be told that it was time to head home, they decided they were done & came in on their own accord!  Asher had his costume stripped off within seconds of coming through the front door.

Here’s our brood:

tt

Alexa was a witch, Yumi paid tribute to PEI & went as Anne of Green Gables, Asher was a Giraffe, & Chancery was a friendly Lion!
