Asher: “Don’t forget a nice smile, Chancery!”

IMG_9273

Chancery: “And move your hips just a little so they can see how great our clothes look!”

A Fair Bit o’ Snow

We have been having some fairly good snowstorms here lately.  These pictures were taken a few weeks ago, & we probably have another foot at this point, not to mention the nice piles where the guy who works for the city comes with the giant snowblower & blows all the piles from the plow up into our lawn.

IMG_9235

Here Asher demonstrates just how deep the snow is in the yard.  His legs are totally immersed in the snow.

IMG_9236

Now Asher is standing on the snbowblower pile, which has grown considerably bigger since this picture was taken.

IMG_9237

I think if Asher had his way we would take pictures like this everyday to document the daily amount of snow in our yard.

The kids have gone out to play in it a few times, but it gets pretty crunchy & difficult to play in quite quickly.  Today the kids are having a day off school despite no new snow & clear roads.  I guess there is a storm moving in sometime today, & they are worried about kids getting stuck at school…  Asher is starting to like being home more than going to school, so I guess it’s time to break out the workbooks & do some learning!

Sleepy Talk

Asher has been sick the last few days, & apparently last night was having some weird feverish dreams.

I heard him calling for me, so I went upstairs to see what he needed.

Asher: “My little nightlight was on, it was on by my alarm…”

and he seemed to have gone back to sleep.

Me: “Asher, are you awake?”

Asher: “Yes, I’m ok.”

Later he was doing a very sad cry.  PChad went up this time…

Asher: “I lost my map!  I know I don’t really have a map, but I lost it.”

PChad said he seemed to know these were dreams & they didn’t make sense, but it was very frustrating to him all the same.

Asher: “My mind is just not letting me get to sleep!”

Quick, Mummy!

Chancery just came up behind me as I was vacuuming.

“Help me , Mummy!  I need a kleenex right now!  My nose is drooling!”

When You Are Sick on Your Birthday…

Sunday was my birthday, & a snow day, & I was sick.  It was a perfect trifecta.  So, while I lay in bed, the kids made me birthday cards!

Chancery made me this birthday card:

The front “Birthday”

IMG_9242

The inside “Mummy, Happy, (& 1 heart for each of us)”

The letters are all there, if not in the right order.

Asher made this one.  I had just been to a ladies’ tea & brought a word scramble home, so he decided to utilize that in my card.

Then, since I wasn’t feeling well, they made me get well cards!

This is from Asher:

IMG_9245

Front – Since he made bubble letters, & the ‘t’ looked like a cross, he decided to draw Jesus on it.

IMG_9246

Inside – We have another word scramble!  Asher saw that I had written some letters on the right side of the page & asked me about them.  “I used Grandma Toots’ trick to figure one of the scrambled words out,” I told him.  Asher then informed me, “You are not allowed to write on the card like that.”  I guess I should have used scrap paper!

IMG_9247

Back – isn’t it nice?

Chancery also made me a get well card!

Inside – “Chancery Mummy”, another heart & a design

I also got a picture of the world from Chancery for my birthday!

I am glad to say that I feel much better today, but I seemed to have passed it on to the kids.  Hopefully it steers clear of PChad!

Flat Chancery

PChad has had a lot of meetings in the evenings lately, so I’ve been putting the kids to bed more often.  When he gets home from his meetings, he will often go up to the kids’ rooms & tuck them in again.  PChad was a bit surprised when he almost stepped on Chancery the other night!  She was just lying right by the door!  He turned on the hall light to see what was going on, to discover this…

Chancery had taken off her clothes & then carefully laid them out to look like a person!

IMG_9232

Chancery: “Like a giant piece of Lego?”

IMG_9233

Asher: “I suppose you could, Chancery, but that’s not very exciting.”

Bulgogi

I’ve only had Bulgogi a handful of times.  The first was  when we were at seminary & some Korean students made it for us.  It was so good!  Then I ordered it at a restaurant about a year ago & was really disappointed.  I searched around online & found a really good recipe that is super easy.  I just fried it up, but you could try grilling it too.

1 lb Beef thinly sliced (I usually use about 3 pounds, we like our meat!)

5 T Soy Sauce

2.5 T Sugar

1/4 C Chopped Green Onion

2 T Minced Garlic

2 T Sesame Seeds

2 T Sesame Oil

1/2 t Pepper

Place the beef in a ziploc bag.  Combine all other ingredients in a small bowl & pour into bag with Beef.  Refrigerate at least 1 hour.

Heat your frying pan with a little oil on Med/High.  Remove the Beef from the bag, saving the marinade.  Cook Beef a few minutes, then add the marinade.  Reduce heat & simmer for 5 minutes.

Serve over rice or egg noodles.

Mississippi Mud Brownies

When I was in high school, I remember buying a brownie mix from the store for Mississippi Mud Brownies.  They were not much different from normal brownies except there was a packet of marshmallow cream that you swirled into the batter before baking.

I have not been able to find that brownie mix for years, but have tried to replicate it many, many times.  The closest I got was using the marshmallow ice cream topping, but it doesn’t seem to be available in Canada.  So, it was back to the drawing board.

I’ve searched for a decent recipe online, but was just never able to find one that was close to the original.  Then my friend Denise passed on a recipe she had for the brownies.  It’s delicious.  Without further ado, I give you Mississippi Mud Brownies…

IMG_9160

Beat together:

4 Eggs

2 C Sugar

Add:

1.5 C Flour

1 C Margarine

1/3 C Cocoa

1 t Vanilla

1 C Coconut (optional)  -I did not add this, as it was never in the brownies I’m so fond of.  I have no idea if the addition of coconut would be good or not.

Grease 9x13 & bake @ 350 for 30-40 minutes.  As soon as it is out of the oven, spread a 7 oz jar of Marshmallow Cream/Fluff over the top.  Then swirl the frosting.

Frosting:

2 T Cocoa

1/4 C Margarine

3 T Milk

Bring to a boil & add:

2 C Powdered/Icing Sugar

1/2 t Vanilla

Try not to eat the whole pan by yourself!

Angry Animals

When Chad’s sister & family were visiting this summer, we started seeing various knock-offs of the Angry Bird theme t-shirts.  Owen ended up finding an “Angry Moose” shirt in Newfoundland, & we found Spencer an “Angry Lobster” shirt from PEI.

Asher spotted an “Angry Puffin” shirt in Nova Scotia, which is one of his new favourite shirts.

IMG_8563

It has made us wonder, are there other “Angry Animals” from the other provinces?  Does each province have it’s own animal to claim?

I think it’s a great theme, & the kids loved that they all had similar shirts from the trip!
