Foreign Objects
Last Friday morning I thought I was going to take our first trip to the ER. At breakfast as I was cleaning up, I heard Chancery saying, “I can’t get it out! I can’t get the raisin out of my nose!”
At first I thought she was just playing around, since she was holding a raisin up to her nose, but then she said, “There is another one already in there!”
I couldn’t see one when I looked, but I could feel a slight bulge in her nose. It was a school day for Asher, so we went to brush our teeth, & I figured I’d better have another look under the lights in the washroom. I laid her down on the counter & took the tweezers out, just in case I was able to see the raisin. By that time Chancery had sneezed a few times & it must have been just enough to move the raisin down a bit, so when I peeked, I could just see a little of it.
Thankfully I was able to remove the raisin quite easily, & now I can say that I am an expert at foreign object retrieval from the nasal cavity. I never had this problem with Asher… I’m just wondering what other predicaments Chancery’s going to get herself into!

Lessons In Buckets
With Asher at Pre-Kindergarten 3 mornings a week, we’ve been having lots of interesting conversations of late. There’s a whole new world of ideas & thought processes that he’s being introduced to, & it has been very exciting watching them play out around the house.
Last week the take home lesson was about how we all have “buckets” & we can be a bucket-filler, or a bucket-dipper. When we do or say nice things, we fill other people’s buckets, & when we say or do mean things, we dip into others’ buckets.
Chancery was playing with one of Asher’s paper hats he had taken home from school, & eventually it broke. She went up to Asher & said, “Sorry, Asher. I broke your hat.” It took Asher a few seconds to pay attention to her & when it dawned on him what had happened I heard him wail, “Chancery broke my hat! She broke my hat & now my heart is broken & my bucket is EMPTY!”

Coffee Lover In The Making
During dessert time seems to be a treasure trove of good conversation with the kids. Last night was no exception. PChad was dishing up the desserts & I told him, “I don’t want much dessert since I’m going to Starbucks later.”
“I’m going to Starbucks!” Chancery chimed in.
“No, you’re not going to Starbucks,” I informed her, “Mummy is.”
Chancery was quick to respond, “Ye-es, I’m gonna have COFFEE!” She followed up that statement with a little chuckle, but I have a feeling that it won’t take long for the kids to talk me into little sips here & there…

A Sweet Deal
I answered, “We don’t have anymore brownies.”
Asher then sweetly asked, “Well, can we make some?”
“Sure, we could do that,” I replied as my heart melted. He wants to bake with me!
Asher then told me his complete plan. “Ok, I’ll just play some games on my computer while you cook them, & then you can tell me when they are done.”
So I told him that if he wanted brownies, he’d have to help me bake them (looks like we’ll have to revisit “The Little Red Hen” book).

Musical Tastes
One day, we got in the car & PChad had left the radio on a station. Asher immediately said, “I don’t like this song. Can we please listen to Weezer?” I didn’t know it, but PChad had also switched the CDs in the car & put in Linkin Park’s “Minutes To Midnight” instead of the ever-present Blue Weezer album we had all grown so fond of.
I pressed the CD button, & when the music started playing Asher declared, “This is my favourite song!” He quickly followed it up with the statement, "…and it has the yelling song on it too!” which describes the song quite adeptly.
I give you “the yelling song”

Prayer Pockets
Yesterday morning PChad was putting a hoodie on & Asher commented, “You can put your hands in your pockets, & hold them together!”
PChad agreed that it was possible to do so. Asher thought for a few minutes about how neat that was & then he came up with an even better idea. “You can put your hands in your pockets & pray!”
“You sure could, that would be a good thing to do, wouldn’t it?” PChad said. Asher then quickly ran to his room to find a hoodie of his own to wear. Later when I was at Walmart with the kids, I was glad about his sweater choice, as it came in quite handy that I could remind him of his prayer pockets when he was unable to stop touching items on the shelves!

Say Yes!
We are trying to break Chancery of the habit of saying, “Yeah.” We want her to say “yes” instead. Last week we had been correcting her quite a bit & she was catching on quite well. So well in fact that she started catching US saying “yeah”, and began correcting us by saying, “Say YES, not yeah, Mummy!” PChad was enjoying that I was the one who kept speaking incorrectly. But I wasn’t the only one guilty of not saying yes.
We went to a restaurant for dinner, & when the waitress came by & asked if we’d like refills on our drinks, PChad replied in the affirmative. AS she walked away, the WAITRESS jumped in on the correcting action & said, “YES? You’d like a refill?”
Being corrected by a two year old is bad enough, but I think being corrected by a waitress who wasn’t privy to all the earlier discussions was the icing on the cake!

***************************************Chancery: “It’s time to smile, Asher!”
Asher: “What? That wasn’t good enough?”
Asher: “Well, maybe I don’t WANT to smile! Have you ever thought of that?”
Chancery: “Asher, you need a hug.”
Chancery: “Dear God, please help Asher to feel better, amen.”
Chancery: “A hug works every time!”

Asher’s Field Trip
Yesterday Asher’s Pre-K class went to the fire station.
Unfortunately we had an appointment at the US Consulate in Halifax, that we could not miss. So we spent the day in the car…
…and 2 hours at the consulate waiting for them to tell us that we didn’t have the proper birth certificate for Chancery, so we have more work to do before she can get her proof of US citizenship.
After a full day of being cooped up, the natives started getting restless. Here is an account of our day…
It all started as a yawn that was mistaken for a “roar”, it quickly became a roaring contest…

It Just Got Better
I thought this commercial couldn’t get any better…
Well, Sesame Street proved me wrong…
It saddens me greatly that Sesame Street isn’t available in my area. Oh yeah, I’m sure the kids would like it too, but there are so many hidden references that would go over their heads that are DESIGNED for the parents!

Asher: “What’s that, Chancery?”
Asher: “It seems we are testing what it’s like too be a red-head!”

Mistaken Identity
On Monday when I was taking Asher to school, I had to take a different route due to some road construction blocking the road we usually take. About 1/2 way to Asher’s school, I noticed a young lady walking along the side of the road with a UPEI backpack. She was walking rather slowly & I thought she looked a bit tired.
I continued on & dropped Asher off at school. By the time I was leaving the school, the young lady had just passed the entrance & was continuing along the road in the same direction I was headed. So I stopped & asked if she’d like a ride. She got in the truck & said, “Thank you so much! It’s so nice of you to offer me a ride! I was working late last night & was up until 2, so I slept in a bit this morning, but I just knew I was going to be late for class! Are you headed to class as well?”
She then looked in the back seat & saw Chancery. “No,” I told her, “I’m on my way to the grocery store, but the University is on my way, so I figured you might like a lift.” We chatted the rest of the way & she thanked me again for helping her get to classes on time. I didn’t mind a bit. I kind of like being mistaken for a University student, especially when the person asking is 19!

Small Town Settled
I was meeting a friend at Starbucks last week, and as is my custom, I arrived about 15 minutes early. This can be a real nuisance, having the tendency to be early to everything, especially when everyone around seems to be on “island time”. If you agree to meet someone at 8 o’clock, they most likely won’t arrive until quarter past, whereas I am there at quarter ‘til.
So I arrived 1/2 an hour before my friend, and as I sat there, I realized that I must be settling into this small town. Without knowing any of them were planning on being there, I ran into 4 other people that I know. It might have taken 2 years to get to that point, but it’s a nice feeling knowing that most places I go, I’ll probably run into someone that I can chat with for that half hour before my party arrives.

A Slow Burn, & Life In Defiance –Reviews
I had a bit of reading time on my trip this summer, so I took A Slow Burn & Life In Defiance the next two books along hoping to find the time to read them. I have to tell you, it is a shame that there were only three books in the series. I enjoyed every page. There are some books that I get so engrossed in that I want to hurry up & read to find out what happens, yet I don’t want to read them TOO quickly because then they will be over. All three of these books were like that for me.
The characters are all flawed, some in very obvious ways, others not so much. There were bits of each person that were very relatable, maybe not that I share the exact trait with them, but I could understand where they were coming from & why they did the things they did. Even though these are Christian Fiction novels, they don’t wrap up neatly with everyone living “happily every after”. That’s what I like about them, there are no platitudes.
If you haven’t picked up these books yet, you really should. They are a great read, extremely well written, & very real.

“………………”
Chancery: “I think Mum’s ready to take some pictures, Asher.”
Asher: “Well, she certainly isn’t prepared for what I’m about to do.”
Asher: “Aaahhhh! I’m on a roller coaster!”
Asher: “Woah! It’s going so FAST!”
Chancery: “That was pretty good, Asher. Maybe next time I can ride on it with you!”
